| | A lot has been said about this work, on RoR as well as on other Objectivist boards. Use the Google search for This Site to see some of that. In LOTR there are no anti-heroes with muddled motives, and we are all in favor of good triumphing. The camera work is lush, with huge scenes and astounding shots contrasted with clear close-ups. Everything is in-focus, even the misty parts. The musical score delivers a library of leitmotivs.
It is also too easy to criticize the mysticism and anti-modernism. The Shire is the misremembered perfect past perfect of the medieval English village: though the hobbits have waterwheel mills, Sauron and Saruman are industrialists with no respect for green life. There is a deeper anti-humanism. While Aragorn is a hero, mankind does not measure well against elfs, dwarfs, hobbits or ents. Thus passed the Fourth Age of Middle Earth... and now we live in lesser times...
Today, I bought the Ralph Bakshi movie from 1978
and was surprised and saddened at how much of that was taken for the Peter Jackson film. It was as if they used the Bakshi animation for their storyboard.

Perhaps,the Pegasus must have the real wings of an eagle on the real body of a horse because all fantasy must originate in reality: the unreal is impossible to think about.
And yet...
