MH - Thanks for posting this review.  This is one of the few shows I often try to catch on television.  I was never a comic book fan and I'm too young to remember the original Superman movies.  But this series is great!

I love this show.  Lex Luthor is a very appealing character from an Objectivist viewpoint.

Tom Welling rocks! From a pure aesthetic point of view, that is. ;-)

[Anyone who hasn't yet seen the show but is considering doing so please note: the following message contains plot spoilers]

Daniel,

I love this show.  Lex Luthor is a very appealing character from an Objectivist viewpoint

In a number of respects that is certainly true, though seems that by the start of the 4th season the nastier aspects of Lex's personality are really coming to the fore and his relationship with Clark seems headed down the toilet pan (you may know more than I as the UK broadcasts are a few months behind the US as bloody usual!).

I would argue though that a number of the other characters display traits that Objectivists would recognise as virtuous - Clark going ahead and testifying against Lionel in the season 3 finale despite his massive falling out with Lex because it was the right thing to do springs immediately to mind, as does Jonathan's justification for risking his own life to bring Clark back earlier in the season - seemed to me he was essentially justifying it in terms of value judgement rather than altruism. More generally Clark's determination to uncover his origins while at the same time rejecting Jor-El's "preordained" destiny in favour of charting his own course encapsulates the entire free will v determinism issue.

Yeah, I agree Matthew.

I think Lana's pretty good by Objectivist standards too.  She's an entrepreneur--I like the fact that she went into business with Lex Luthor and began running The Talon (that's the name of her coffee shop right?) when she was still in high school.
