This movie is one of my all-time favorites. I was reminded of it when watching "The Incredibles" last week - Holly Hunter is the voice of the Elastigirl!

I just love this movie. It is quite interesting that Holly Hunter's own speech problem is the integrate part of the story!

I liked the movie when I first saw it.

My brother, who is also an Objectivist, pointed out one major problem with this:  Only "Tom Grunick the flashy, up & coming news anchor" gets what he wants.

Altman tells Craig that Grunick is the Devil not because he comes at you with flre and claws, but because he wants you to compromise just a little bit.

By the end of the movie, they have been forced to move on.  And if I remember correctly, Altman ends up divorced and Craig's engagement (or marriage) never comes off.  Meanwhile, Grunick, who has no standards to fight for, makes it to the top.

Michael,
I agree with you assessment. But it is very realistic, isn't it? I've seen similar things happening all the time. Success in personal life is a very tricking business. It requires a different set of talents.

By the way, I am not clear what was Jane's professional position in the end. I thought she's also somewhat near the top. Aaron just became a local news man, right?

Mike, Hong, the real triumph of the story is Albert Brooks' character choosing to be a great, local news reporter instead of a compromised, celebrated network icon. His is a tale of success and heroism, not one of comformity and cowardice. His outcome is the greatest.

Better to be a man of integrity that sleeps well at night than a glory hunter that tosses and turns.

Ross

NB: Brooks' speech to Holly Hunter about the devil is one of the greatest evocations in modern cinema. Superb.

Ross,
Thanks for clear that up. Well, I am not sure it is entirely Aaron's own choice. Pity the guy just couldn't control his own sweat! And the acting was just wonderful!

(Sorry, it took me 3 tries to get the correct spelling of "Ross". ;-))
