I remember listening to that speech, and then running it back to make sure I heard it right. I thought the phrase "Dig our way out of the hole" was so bizarre, that I put the following video together:

The protocol is rather clear and this is a campaign rally. I will say that I have not placed my hand over my heart on occasions when I felt that the salute to the flag was out of context, for instance at coin club meetings. Funniest video of me: we went to a wedding this summer where we were asked to "bless" the couple by raising our right arms. Nice shot. ... and the guy happened to be a Hapsburg at that... I can't believe I did that... So, let us give the Pres-E at least a 1% benefit of the doubt.
