Q. What's the main listed telephone number to the Vatican?

A. Et cum spiritu tuo

Pope Benedict XVI is reviving the Tridentine Right, the celebration of Mass in Latin as a voluntary observance. It had been forbidden after Vatican II as inscrutable to the congregation. (Most priests are still required to study it, and it is still the Church's official tongue. Strangely enough, most Vatican business is conducted in Italian, official releases are often first published in French, and John Paul and Benedict have usually spoken to multilingual crowds in that schismatic tongue, English.)

I view the revival of Latin as a good thing, it leads to other beneficial habits.

The Latin Phrase is pronounced, approximately "eight cum spee ree two two oh" and means and with thy spirit

I didn't expect to get Atlas points for this, since I thought the phone number up myself on the spot here--having heard years ago about a priest who had recurring nightmares about the number 7734, the significance of which was only discovered later by someone else, then adding the analogous exchange 999 to make a complete phone number for purposes of this thread.

Now Googling the number, I see another person had the exact same idea! (Adding an appropriate Canadian postal code, L8R S8N.) So I deduce that the points awarder Googled the number as well.

Rodney,
When I was a kid we used 7734 all the time.  Then, when calculators became available we would do calculations that resulted in 7734.  I'm embarrassed to say that I wasn't a kid then.  : )  I thought the 999 was a nice touch so I rewarded you.
Thanks,
Glenn

Well, what the f*** is the significance? Why make us all jump through hoops?

I read an article by a columnist who happens to be Catholic who mentioned that the Latin Mass was being revived - which I cheer because it will lead more people to study the Classics - and I posted the joke she related from her childhood because it was cute and wholesome and made sense linguistically, having 7 syllables, and ending in 2-2-Oh. So in response I get nonsensical obscenity and grown atheists acting like Catholic school yard hooligans? Oh, the irony.

OK, Rodney: I've found out the significance of 7734 relating to the Vatican. As you haven't even yet told us the answer I'll reveal it. You were diverting me by referring to my "f***", which had no relevance at all. I Googled 7734 as you suggested and got nothing.

The answer is "hELL", which is inverted 7734 when viewed on a calculator.

Googling the Canadian postal code reveals nothing that I can discern except some irrelevant lyrics. Will you please tell us the answer?

Sam

That looks as if it's the answer, Erica, congrats.

I'll admit I've been a bit testy here but it's very irritating to have this "enlightenment interrupt-us" ... being tantalized and kept hanging.

Phil Coates on post #36 of the Forty Year Decline of Objectivism thread promised
This issue has to do with something often overlooked about the -nature- of Objectivism and I'd like to start a thread on this soon. My contention is that the deepest facts about Objectivism that affect I and II and all the problems we have in growing our movement, educating and developing Objectivists, changing the world, and avoiding internal acrimony has to do with THREE FACTS ABOUT OBJECTIVISM.

Can anyone guess what they might be? The contest starts now.

"Objectivism is _____, ______, and _____."
That was on June 11 and we still don't know the earth-shaking answers.

Quizzes can be fun but, come on, give the answers in a day or two. It's a bit like bullying: "I know something that you don't and I won't tell. Nyaa, nyaa, nyaa!"

I'm with you on that, Sam. And I agree about the other thread you mentioned.

Of course, with all the suspense and build-up and waiting, if Phil's answer isn't positively the most earth-shattering and profound one you 've ever seen, it will kind of make him look silly, won't it?

(I have a picture in my head of his "revelation" post, and then several more posts afterward from others, all saying, "That's it?")

Hopefully, that won't happen, and it will be worth the wait. But we'll see.

Erica

No problem Ed, it's not a blatant obscenity.
