Well...

I remember our minister building this story into his sermon when I was a boy.  To me, this story illustrates the difference between irrationality and rationality.  The irrational ones were not "greedy" but irrational.  By contrast, the rational ones employed the trader principle to transform their circumstances.

Of course, ideally, they would dump those silly handles altogether so each man could feed himself!

Yes - that parable is of the tribalist/slaver mindset - to consider others before oneself...  nothing funny about that at all, as it is indeed a false illusion........

I heard this in feel-good sermons and Sunday school lessons when I was a kid too. I remember that my question was not welcome when I asked why no one was bright enough to just hold the spoon in the middle.

I don't sense your tongue protruding from your cheek Ciro, so let me take your hand.

This is the follow-up to the crab-bucket story from some months ago.  Eventually, we learn.

Really, an interesting 'parable' that illustrates nothing more than the sometime situational-worth of co-operation.

However, what I find most interesting is it's unintended illustration that whenever the term 'greedy' is used to castigate the implied selfishness of people, what's really meant is (can one say 'irrational?) narcissism. Like the term 'selfishness,' so many of the term 'selfish's derivative concepts (such as 'greedy') carry so much false baggage-meanings.
