Michael,

Was there another group?

Those who are so stupid, they are actually intelligent?

Sharon - Nobody can be stupid enough to be intelligent according to Cipolla's definitions (based on loss and gain). But many intelligent people are hopelessly stupid.

For those who want the short version, here are the five basic laws of human stupidity and the four basic types of people in terms of loss and gain (without the breakdowns of the different types).

Five basic laws of human stupidity

Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.

The probability that a certain person will be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.

A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.

Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.

A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
(Corollary): A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.

Four basic types of people in terms of loss and gain

Intelligent - Those whose acts result in gain to themselves and gain to others.
Helpless - Those whose acts result in no gain or loss to themselves and gain to others.
Bandit - Those whose acts result in gain to themselves and loss to others.
Stupid - Those whose acts result in no gain or loss to themselves and loss to others.

The lampooning "scientific" analysis in the article is hilarious as it is so true.

We should not neglect to mention Darwin's Law:

Evolution weeds out the Helpless by their own nature, the Bandits by retribution, and the Stupids by both their nature and retribution. The Flynn Effect is an empirical verification.

This of course implies that belief in the Cipolla essay is a belief in "Intelligent Design." Taking the analysis in such context, we can infer that the Intelligence responsible for the Design of Humanity has guaranteed that a fraction of the population (å) be consigned to stupidity, as per Rule #1.

From this we can deduce one of two possible traits of "The Intelligence":

1) "The Intelligence" is stupid.
2) Humanity was created in a fit of supreme irony.

Possibility #1 conflicts with all known literature that may tentatively provide clues as to the nature of "The Intelligence." Some have even ascribed Omniscience to "The Intelligence." Certainly, the concept "Intelligence is Stupid" is a very grave negative contradiction that violates the tautology of reality.

Possibility #2 on the other hand, is indicative of the erratic trait expounded in Rule #3 -- Humanity bears a loss with the å fraction that is stupid. "The Intelligence" has also lost å fraction of potential believers, since by definition, stupids do not get irony.

The inevitable conclusion follows: whatever possibility is chosen, belief in "Intelligent Design" is stupid.

As a cold comfort, the existence of this analysis may be taken as an attempt by a Darwinist as a means for willing respondents to self-index themselves. Such a process would produce a net gain for said Darwinist and Humanity, a sure indication of the Darwinist's intelligence.

Sharon, that could Forrest Gump or Hegel, I'm betting on Gump.

MSK, this is the best lampoon I've read. <bonk>
