There seems to be a common practice these days among self-professed Christians – really just a continued practice from the outset – of cherry-picking which commandments of the Bible to obey. I am thinking specifically of fornication or sex prior to marriage. Am I the only one to notice this or is it really that common? What bothers me is the hypocrisy of the worst offenders who still want to wear the label of Christian and draw me into their flock while engaging in practices contrary to the alleged teachings of Jesus and his successors, especially Saint Paul.

I guess my question to this forum is whether you have actually pointed this to the offenders who condemn atheists and gays for violating God's Word while they do the same themselves.

It might make a fine leverage point to hoist them on their own retards – er, petards.

Of course, all this assumes the common interpretation of Scripture as forbidding fornication, though I am sure fringe sects do not make such an interpretation.

Christians are walking talking contradictions. I laugh my head off every time I hear about a bimbo that is preserving her "virginity" but has no problem giving blowjobs to an entire football team...good christian gal there.

All Hail Lady Hymen!

I think I finally learned why I had such a hard time getting along with roommates whom I should have liked more than the ones who were my opposites. The religious ones were hypocrites and the hedonists were not. The religious ones also seemed more interested in minding my business than the hedonists did since the latter preoccupied themselves with their own pleasure rather than the salvation of others. I have a natural respect for people who practice integrity to their professed values even if I disagree with their values. At the time, I was still struggling to transition from religion to secularism, so that was a valuable part of my learning curve.

I think most people fall into a couple of categories. Firstly, most people in America are born Christians. It's a situation similar to how many if not most Jews hardly practice their religion. It becomes part of them and it's hard to completely renounce it, even if it is in-name-only. "Former me" falls into this category.

Secondly, there is the "Well, we're all sinners" or "Everybody's got to live a little" type person. This is much more off-putting. The person is basically a mistaken pragmatist, and thinks that in order to best be able to practice his faith he needs to go away from it from time to time. Either that or he thinks he can pick and choose which parts to follow. This includes practicing gay Catholics, women who want to be priests, etc. This type of person has never made any sense to me.

So to offer an alternative viewpoint, it's almost nice to see a Christian that hardly practices their faith. Probably 80-90% of my friends are Catholics. They are relatively secular and un-boneheaded. Perhaps over time I'll show them the error in their ways. But it's the religious people with fewer contradictions that really disgust me.
