Michael, If you have a full-time job and attend law school almost full time, and still have time to post lengthy rebuttals to other people's posts, you are a superman. Pretty amazing! I couldn't begin to do what you're doing. In that respect, you are a lot like Roger, who is also a dynamo with an exceptionally full plate, but still manages to contribute to SOLO. You and he should get together...uh, on second thought, that might not be such a good idea! ;-)

As Branden, and others, have pointed out, there are levels or degrees of focusing - or thinking, if you wish - and as such would make much differences on the attention given to the respective issues of cognition....

You better watch it, Mr. Malcolm, you are moving dangerously close to the Neutral Zone. :)

Bill,

Thanks for the compliment.  I must say that you are gracious in the discussions (much more so than me) and you have the unique ability to keep a cool-head about you when things heat up.  Roger and I seemed to have gotten off on the wrong foot, which is probably more the result of sharp personalities.

Roger,
Upon calmer reflection, I apologize for the condescending remarks.

Regards,
Michael

Michael Moeller,

In light of that, I withdraw the normative part of my criticism of your comments to him.

To be clear, I think you are wrong in how you read him and what you claim he is saying, but I withdraw the yapping, horseshit and that kind of stuff with respect to your posts to him.

Michael

With all this sweetness and light, this place could become pretty boring! Seriously, this kind of civility is nice to see. It's something I have crusaded for in other venues, like Atlantis II, usually to no avail, which is why I no longer post there. But even with the sharp personalities on SOLO, the people here are much more civil and benevolent than the anarchists on that forum! I sometimes wonder what this world would be like if the anarchists had their way, because they are by far the least rational of the libertarians I have encountered. My apologies to the other Michael, who, despite his anarchism, does not fit that description.

I must say, though, that some of the sarcastic exchanges I've witnessed here can be pretty creative and entertaining (if you're not personally involved!). There are some intelligent writers and good polemicists on SOLO. Of course, they don't succeed in changing their opponents' minds, which is one reason I tend to avoid the sarcasm. I'd like the person I'm debating to give my views a fair hearing, and he's not likely to if I tell him off. It's like the sales clerk who's rude to her customers. Are they likely to buy her products? Probably not. Also, I find that if I remain calm, I'm more likely to see the logic in my opponent's argument, even if, in the final analysis, I don't agree with it.

Hmmm, I tried posting this earlier, but it mysteriously has failed to appear in the thread. So, here goes again...

Michael, I'm sure you're right about the personality clash being a factor in our clash, and I appreciate your apology, but I'm still going to let you have the last word in our interchanges about determinism on this thread.

Rich,
I don't think NB's position is distinguishable from AR's (and LP's).  If you read his distinction in Honoring the Self (if I remember correctly without the book in front of me he puts it in a footnote) it is really the same as what LP wrote in OPAR.  Notice the close parallel with what NB says about self-esteem, that it makes certain behaviors more/less likely.  Why?  Because it is NOT a determinant.

Ciro,
Yes.  I thought I would get a break from beating off hard determinists there--at least they are "softer" here.

Roger,
Well, ok, I guess.  To be honest, I think my "interchange" was with Bill and the beginning of our "clash" started with Bill's rebuttal using the AR quote, which I didn't think was a rebuttal--and then things went haywire from there.  So I'm not sure where we stand on an "interchange".  At any rate, my "last word on determinism" will be over on the other thread at Dissent.

Bill,
I will meet you over there.  Because of my tight time schedule, I may post in parts.  But feel free to reraise any issue you think I missed.

Michael...

I agree, more or less.

I was implying something else.
