"Private-party retaliation" as an antidote to terror?

Oh, you mean like the Sunni-Shia fighting in Iraq?

Gigi,

Bless your heart but you have gone and mixed me up with that colorful character, Mr. Keer. I won't fault you for that as ole' TK -- in spite of my oft-too-witty differences with him -- is someone who has by now earned my respect. As to your query, I haven't yet made myself aware of details surrounding Viktor Bout, but I'll let you know if or when I do ...

Robert,

The problem with the Sunni-Shia fiasco is not only that neither of them stand on moral ground, but that they've failed -- as genuine human beings -- to create a society based on natural, individual rights and the judicial corollary: a transparent rule of law. I can't believe that I'd have to "tell" you that. Harking back to those famous Ross Perot-isms, what we've got with the S-S fiasco is some wily pigs fighting in the mud -- with the damn pig-pen gate wide open.

And for you to say what you said to me, you're simply slinging mud -- so either back off or put on an apron ...

Corrected.(sheepish shrug : ) ) Ed, I'm just learning about Bout and a couple of other Russian arms companies that are selling to everyone on every side, making billions of dollars and yet we are forbiding  private contract bids on Osama etal. Contracts that would have stipulations binding certain unsavory actions and behavior such as occured with Blackwater.

In the TV show Jericho there is a mercenary outfit called something similar to Blackwater, which is supposed to be the same thing.  They are villains in this case, but then again, so is the government, or at least a faction of it.

It is actually a rather good show.  One interesting part is that being isolated now from most of society means that government has to be re-built in the town, and there are conflicts of security, law, private property, and such.
