Hi Fred,
I saw you give a great talk (inspired and on the money) defending Hume at TOC's Summer Seminar in 2002.  I was excited to hear it because when I came across Hume as an undergraduate I had a completely different reaction to the one I'd been led to expect by Rand in "For the New Intellectual".  I loved the way Hume wrote, thought he was intellectually honest and a great reasoner, with brilliant insights into miracles, property and natural theology.  I had a very similar response as you, I think.

I am also quite sympathetic to Plato, Kant and Nietzsche.  So I am anxious to read your book - have been for a while now.  But, bro, is there any way it can be got for less than the 60 bucks they want to charge at Amazon?  I mean, I understand that, for a book like this, demand is quite low and supply likely even lower, and I'm a capitalist and all, but I have moral reservations about spending so much for a 200 page book.  Is there another way to get it?

                    Best,
                   Greg

Greg, I think Barnes and Noble might be cheaper. If not, you could buy one with a friend; or you might try to evaluate the book not on the number of pages but using some other criterion--like truth, justice and the American way (I think that's Superman's criterion--tee hee.
Or you could buy 2 copies and sell one for $100 and that would lower the cost of your book. Or you could suggest someone give it to you for Christmas--what a gift. Or you could find out what library has it in stock. My local Carnegie library will order books for its borrowers.
You could get a part time job to pay for expensive books like mine. You could consider its cost when adjusted for inflation. In 1931 you would only have paid $5.40--of course you would have been making less money. Or you could buy the book and read it over and over until you're satisfied that you got your money's worth. Or you could try to get a new government ageny created that would give you the book. Etc.
Hope this helps.
Wait a minute--are you telling me you don't think I worth a lousy $60. And I thought you loved me.
Fred
