Teresa, I positively love the way you put things. At the conclusion of the last midterm election a friend complained that with the House and Senate so closely divided we shouldn't expect them to get anything done. I replied, 'one can hope'. I'm sure he misunderstood.

This proposed "shutdown" of state government was all everyone talked about at work yesterday.  The attitude was either that of fear, or amusement.

I was among the amused.

Along with threatening to shut down everything "non-essential," which includes Detroit's thriving casinos (State government controls everything the casinos do, and takes a third of the profits. Michigan Supreme Court issued a stay yesterday regarding the casinos. They will stay open), and liquor distribution (you can't buy or sell a beer without the state's say so. Michigan's liquor taxes are among the highest in the country), the governor emphasises how ignorant she thinks Michigan citizens are by claiming we'll all "suffer" as a consequence of a government shutdown.

Mark my words: The GOP will cave in to a tax increase, which will include a whole new slew of taxes on services never before burdened on Michigan citizens, and state government workers will get a juicy raise come next spring.

State government "closed" for approx. four hours over night (big whoop).  So much to keep track of on a Monday morning between 12 and 4am!

GOP caved, as predicted.  Personal income tax will rise from 3.9 to 4.6% (supposed to revert back to 3.9 by 2015. Yeah, right.  It'll never ever happen.)

6.0% sales tax on "luxury" services.  Cable, tanning salons, movies, land scaping, interior decorators, horse track, etc etc ad nausium.

All to take effect Dec. 1, 2007.
