Nice talk, thanks!  And good to see this at a TED lecture.

Just an aside, Robert Malcom posted this news item a couple of weeks back.

I totally missed it. Sorry, Robert, but it's so worth repeating. Right? :)

It in essence was an attitude which wished had been fostered when I went to school instead of the usual 'it'll be waiting for you when ye graduate, like an apple off a tree'... note, too, tho was a very helpful family in this, the cost of implementing the idea was not so much, so an unemployed with imagination could become viable in life - just a matter of seeing where an idea needs to be solved and go solve it, to the good of your pocketbook...

Instead, unfortunately, this is considered a freak deal, for the most part, and not to be encouraged among others...

I sent that to my daughter.  She benefited from Objectivist resources such as How to Raise a Brighter Child,  She went to Montessori schools (and public).  But I missed entrepreneurship because of my own limitations.  I sell my labor.  We all do.  But there is a perspective that never resonated with me.  I mean, you can make a lot of money dealing drugs.  Of course, you have the risk of government intervention and all of your customers are druggies and your suppliers are ruthless.  But that applies to all business.  You always have government intervention and everyone is an idiot -- this is the Planet of the Apes -- and leveraged enough, any supplier will turn on you, as witness all the Anti-Trust stories and links I post from the DoJ.

So, I sell my skills to those who can use them.  I have no organization of people to be responsible to or for.  But I do not sell more than I need to to get buy.  I never had the urge for accumulation.  Even in numismatics, I write rather than collect.  "Stuff" just does not mean that much to me.

But is that Thing 1 or Thing 2, nature or nurture?

It's a funny thing...  I thought that I had all of my family of origin issues sorted out 30 or 40 years ago.  But, I lived with my maternal grandparents, who were Hungarian.  They were Republican, to be sure, very supportive of small business (and very distrustful of Big Business).  We had nothing against business per se, but, I never realized until this year that there had been a subliminal message in the home.  I have been casting about for a doctoral program and I mentioned to one of my professors that the Central European University in Budapest seemed interesting.  It was founded by George Soros.  And my professor said that he enjoyed being in Hungary.  "It's a whole nation of people who say that it doesn't matter how much money you have, as long as you are educated."  When he said that, I realized that I must have heard that a hundred times.... which is why I am educated and poor.

So, with my daughter now considering motherhood, I sent her the video.  She's a good worker.  But there is something lacking because she makes enough money to live on with two or three days' effort and then relaxes for four or five.  Somewhere along the way, something was overlooked....
