I like Fred. Hope he runs for President again. Wouldn't it be a hoot to have a "Mr. Thompson" in the White House? ;-)

Yeah, it would be funny to have him in White House, especially if he were the antipode of the Mr. Thompson in Atlas Shrugged.

I consider him the best of the possible candidates, but someone I know said he was a bit too old to run for the presidency. Do any of you agree?

He'll be 70 a couple of months before the November 2012 election.

I think Fred's problem isn't that he is too old -- Reagan was just shy of 70 when he first took office. Fred's "problem" is that he is kind of lazy about campaigning and just doesn't want the office that much.

Personally, I think someone who doesn't want power that much and is disinclined to do much is precisely what would make an excellent president -- I prefer King Log over King Stork -- but those same characteristics makes one essentially unelectable for higher levels of office when competing against power-hungry statists.

I don't think he's too old, but the schedule is pretty grueling.

If you can gauge an individual by their opponents, one of Thompson's in 2007 as the president race was firming up was very encouraging. See the opening lines of this piece:

"No Faith in Republican."

Thompson, by the way, says he is a Christian.

Thompson has always had a reputation in D.C. as being lazy. Too bad because I generally like him.

Ed, a lazy President would be quite a relief at this point!

(By the way, when I went to the link on the Atlas Society site, I noticed that the cover shown for the Rand Renaissance issue of the New Individualist had a nice photo of Rand, but the one I got in the mail had a creepy caricature of her! So creepy that I was embarrassed to have the issue sitting around my house.)

Yes, wondered about that, too - while not think it quite so creepy, much preferred the photo version...

as for Thompson, if ye not pushing for more laws and regulations, then ye considered a 'lazy politician', unfortunately...

Ed,

I enjoyed your article "No Faith in Republicans".

I have always liked Newt Ginrich for his intelligence, sense of humor, quick wit, eloquence, and his support of small government and free enterprise, but his religiosity scares me. Anyone that becomes that obsessed with religious beliefs should not be in politics. Period. Given that politics is about the use of force, and religion is about beliefs... those two don't mix well!

The other downside for Ginrich is his almost unwavering support of the Republican party.

It is sad to see the debate over how religious Jefferson was or was not. Maybe he was much more religious than I'd like to think, and he did own slaves. But neither of those are arguments for bringing religion into government, or bringing back slavery. The religious right is a cancer on our body politic.
