| | An excellent and timely point. I once wrote about the differing death rates from equal or lesser earthquakes -- in tribalist countries vs. individualist ones:
===================== ===================== Richter Scale 8.6 or below:
Tribalists/Collectivists 1968 (7.8) in Iran – 12,000 killed 1970 (7.75) in Peru – 60,000 killed 1976 (8.2) in China -- 240,000 killed 1976 (7.5) in Guatemala – 23,000 killed 1978 (7.7) in Iran – 25,000 killed 1990 (7.7) in Iran – 50,000 killed 1999 (7.4) in Turkey – 35,000 killed Individualists 1964 (8.6) in Alaska – 118 killed**
Death Ratio: > 500 : 1 ===================== ===================== Richter Scale 6.9 or below:
Tribalists/Collectivists 1988 (6.9) in Armenia – 60,000 killed Individualists 1989 (6.9) in San Franciso – 60 killed
Death Ratio: 1000 : 1 ===================== ===================== Richter Scale 6.6 or below:
Tribalists/Collectivists 1972 (6.25) in Nicaragua – 10,000 killed Individualists 1994 (6.6) in Los Angeles – 58 killed
Death Ratio: > 100 : 1 ===================== =====================
**Besides Alaska, varied population densities can explain a minority of the noted, hundred-to-thousand-fold difference, but not a majority of the difference. The bulk of the difference is best explained by tribalism/collectivism and the ensuing poverty of tribalism/collectivism.
