| | Chinese and other ideographic writing systems may seem very different from alphabet-based writing systems, but in reality the brain parses both writing systems similarly. An English reader's brain parses words as "blocks" of strokes, just as a Chinese reader's brain parses the blocks of strokes used in Chinese characters. This is why vertical writing, which breaks up the blocks of characters in English, is difficult to r e a d , and why vertical writing is commonly used in Chinese, since the blocks are strokes are still maintained.
