Very important point you've made here, Tibor. I got the impression that Fisher was describing the evolution of the terms, seeking to tell it like it is (thought to be). I do think he tip toed around actually standing up for the concepts. In this way, passive and "inclusive" description leaves one with the feeling of "yes and so what...?"

Interesting analysis, Tibor.  Regarding Fischer's article, I can buy Fischer's premise that "there is no one true definition of liberty and freedom in the world."  However, I have a harder time with his claim that freedom refers to the "rights of collective belonging."  Apparently Fischer has written a book on the topic, "Liberty and Freedom: A Visual History of America's Founding Ideas."  I just read the product description and two reviews on Amazon.com.  I was expecting to find a political agenda, based primarily on the fact that he seemed determined to get the word "collective" into his NYTimes article as often as possible.  However, I did not get the impression that Fischer has a political axe to grind, though he is no doubt left leaning.  I guess maybe he is just "inadvertantly" undermining the meaning of these concepts, as Tibor suggests.
