"Democracy is a minor political virtue"... that is a classic!  Thanks for sharing your musings. 
 
I read a similar article just the other day that you may enjoy: "Are we a republic or a democracy?" by Dr. Walter E. Williams, Professor of Economics at George Mason University.

Here's an excerpt: "In a democracy, the majority rules either directly or through its elected representatives. As in a monarchy, the law is whatever the government determines it to be. Well, the ironic thing about republicanism is that a majority has to agree that a majority ~should not~ be able to violate individual rights for the system to work. 99 per cent of the American population believe in majoritarian theft and slavery, at least to some degree, so we have a virtually hopeless situation. It is hardly just Boxer.
