Thank you for voting.
The Ohio Supreme Court decided that Norwood cannot take private property by eminent domain for a $125 million development project next to Rookwood Commons. Do you agree or disagree?

It's kind of troubling that only 61% said yes.

When I had casted my vote (at the time of posting) -- over 60% were in disagreement with the ruling (the tables have turned within the last 12 hours).

There is still a general hostility to property rights in many cities with regard to other issues too. I lived in Columbus for six years, so I am more familiar with these examples in some Columbus suburbs.

In Gahanna, Ohio, it is illegal to place a FOR SALE sign in a vehicle. You have to ask permission to build a fence. You also have to have buildings with correct colors. Apparently, Planet Hollywood had considered going there but then didn't go there because of all the bull manure. I know two city councilmen there.

In Dublin, Ohio, it is illegal to have a garage that is facing the street.

Jefferson's "little republics" are doing a beautiful job--aren't they?

Another troubling poll.... Today I voted on MSN in a poll that asked whether congress should pass a "windfall profits" tax affecting oil companies. Obviously I voted not, but I was in the minority (less than 20% !)

For some good news:

1. Self-selecting polls are meaningless.

2. The people in Congress know that such measures lead to shortages and that such shortages are politically suicidal.  They knocked off 3 presidents in a row (Nixon, Ford and Carter), and the same will happen to them if they try it.  (You thought Watergate did Nixon in?  In that case Clinton's crookedness would have done the same.)

Two indicators of progress within living memory are that wage-price controls and the draft are simply no longer on the table.  Some here might not believe it, but both were once considered options.  (I hear the piss-and-moan Randroids already, trying to tell us that they still are.)

Peter,

Involuntary extensions of military service -- for the purpose of pre-emptive war (a small war to prevent a suspected bigger war) -- are the same as a mitigated, back-door draft.

Oh, and I forgot to post this earlier ...

======================
Friends:

I emailed earlier with a request to help turn the tide in a poll being conducted by the Cincinnati Enquirer about the landmark Ohio Supreme Court decision issued yesterday. We're starting to narrow the gap, but we need you to keep voting! We're still far from showing the massive outrage against the abuse of eminent domain we know exists across the country. Don't allow cities and developers to use this poll to justify land grabs in the future.

If you've voted, please vote again. If you haven't, please do so now.

Tell them you AGREE here: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060726/NEWS01/307260029/-1/all

We thank you all.

Sincerely,

#6: I told you so.

#7: This is one reason why self-selecting polls don't mean anything.
