new New Zealand Flag monstrosity
Posted by David Bertelsen on 1/29, 11:55am
I just read that this flag has just been chosen by NZ Herald readers as the most favoured replacement for New Zealand's current flag.

It is quite possibly the ugliest thing I have ever seen. I feel compelled to urge any NZers who are remotely still interested in the fate of the nation to write to the Herald and tell them where to put it before the Greenies, the tribalists and the socialists join forces to bring forth the day when this monstrosity is raised in our names in the only occasions worthy of an ounce of patriotism- sporting events.

I am not a great fan of the current flag. Nor do I, mostly, give a flying fish about New Zealand. But you have to draw the line somewhere.

David

PS my letter is as follows:

This flag is a bastardised mixture of the old and the new, for the sake of keeping the old with the new, the Maori with the European, the earth (koru) with the stars. I really don't like it.

I suggest you read The Fountainhead, a novel by Ayn Rand. In your desire to incorporate a clear and crisp design (eg, the koru element OR the colours OR the stars) with elements of the existing flag and the native, tribal future you seem to envision, you have created a hideous mongrel.

I am trying to find something positive to say to weigh the balance of the negativity, but am afraid I cannot. It is really hideous.
