Sciabarra Fall 2004 Cyberseminar Posted by sciabarra on 5/26/2004, 4:05am
My new cyberseminar, "Putting Dialectics to Work," begins on Monday, September 6, 2004. The central readings for the first third of the course will be from chapters 1-4 and 9 of Total Freedom (with a few supplemental readings from chapters 11-13 of Ayn Rand: The Russian Radical). During the last 2/3 of the course, students will work on preparing a paper---on any topic of their choosing, most likely a real concrete social problem---so that they can come up with a prospectus on the kinds of things they will need to do to approach that problem "dialectically." This means that students will learn to approach a problem by understanding the full context of its implications, by examining it from various points of view and on different levels of generality, and by understanding it as part of a larger system, and as having a history. The cost of the course will be $150 per student for about 13-14 weeks of instruction---but that depends on the number of students enrolling for the course. It's a seminar---and will require weekly participation through an online discussion list. I will assign students to answer questions on directed readings in the first third; in the last 2/3 of the course, student papers will benefit from constructive commentary from fellow students and this instructor.
