An Austrian Philosopher's Review of OPAR Posted by William Dwyer on 5/13, 8:44am
David Gordon reviewed Leonard Peikoff's Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand back in 1994 in The Journal of Libertarian Studies. (Go to the link and scroll down to Page 135.) The reason his review is noteworthy is that Gordon is offering a course on "Ayn Rand and Objectivism" through the Mises Institute in June. He has invited Objectivists to attend, as he will be presenting Rand's ideas in a critical format and would like their input. If you read his review of OPAR, you will get a good idea of his take on Objectivism and an insight into what to expect from the course. I wasn't impressed with his grasp of the philosophy or his philosophical orientation, which is rationalistic, as you might expect. He wrote a bewildering critique of logical positivism, which Ed Thompson cited in a thread entitled "Deconstructing Popper's Falsification and Vienna Circle Verification." http://rebirthofreason.com/Forum/ObjectivismQ&A/0397.shtml. See my reply to Gordon in that thread, if you're interested in an example of how he approaches philosophy, but the latter should be quite evident in his review of OPAR. After reading his review, you can decide whether you think his course is worth taking. I've taken several courses from the Mises Institute from Robert Murphy on various aspects of Austrian economics, and they've all been excellent, but I'm not inclined to pay $100 for 6 lectures in order to debate Rand's philosophy with one of her critics.
