Israeli Court Extends Common-Law Marriage to Gay Couples
Posted by Adam Reed on 11/14/2004, 10:52pm
The Nazareth District Court (yes, in the birthplace of Jesus in the Holy Land, no less) ruled that the doctrine of common-law marriage (a couple living together for a specified number of years are considered legally married, even without any formal ceremony) applies equally to gay couples, so that a long-term gay partner can inherit even when there is no written will. Israel was the first country in the world to provide equal spousal benefits to same-sex partners of its armed forces personnel, and the first to provide equal immigration rights to same-sex partners of citizens. Today's decision confirms Israel as an outpost of Human Civilization in very inhospitable territory. Israel's enemies, including George W. Bush's Saudi Arabian clients, punish homosexuality by death.
