Much talked about, based on His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, this is the story of a girl who holds the key to passage between parallel "universes." Her ability is contrary to the rules of The Magisterium which seeks to rule not only its world, but the others if it can. Like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings stories, this is a tale of fantasy without spirituality in which magic works mechanistically. In this world, one's "soul" is evidenced as another creature, an animal companion of the opposite gender. The companions of children change form until the child matures. Given a design motif reminescent of neo-victorianism the machineries and gadgetries are charming in their Jules Verne modernism. The Golden Compass ends before the story resolves. More to come .... | ||||
