| This is the first novel in Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, comprised so far of eight books following the life of Richard, The Seeker of Truth. Wizard's First Rule begins with Richard as a simple woods-guide, but quickly transforms into a face-paced action/fantasy read that spans a massive continent made up of three realms of varying magical qualities. Goodkind's style isn't flowery, and his sequences are pretty tight. The development of Richard and Kahlan's--his heroine--love affair is expressed with amazing clarity and passion. I recommend this book as a starting point for the entire Sword of Truth series, a long journey through Richard and Kahlans's lives that's wrought with pain and torture, but ultimately and consistently tempered with the light of reason and liberty inherent in Goodkind's expressed philosophical leaning--Objectivism. Not surprisingly, many critics dismiss the later Sword of Truth series as being "preachy", often ignoring the fact that it's a good read, especially for those new to Objectivism. Have fun! |
