Still life and three puppiesStill life and three puppies
Paul Gauguin

There are several reasons that I want to share this. First, to finish off what I had started: after Babushka brought me the “Moscow Courtyard”, I had a chance to visit Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There was a Paul Gauguin exhibition at Met at the time and there I saw Still life and three puppies for the first time. It very much stood out among the surrounding brown Tahiti bodies. I loved it for its simple but vivid treatment of the subjects. Knowing that Babushka was particularly fond of animals, especially pet dogs and cats, I was pretty sure that she would like it too. So I bought a framed print of  “Still life and three puppies ” in the museum shop and gave it to Babushka as a present. It is now hanging in her Moscow apartment.

Now looking at the still life part (fruits) in this painting, I am reminded of something Newberry said before
here: “A contrary example is you might paint a red apple: lemon yellow highlights, orange and red base, and magenta or violet shadows…the total over all affect, with a good artist, will be a red apple…but only simple minds would paint it a solid red”.

Isn’t it just so in this painting?

To friendship and life’s simple pleasures,

Cheers.
