The Battle
by Marty Lewinter

There's a man riding fast - guns at his hips.
He comes from the past with these words on his lips:

"I was sent by Thomas and Patrick and George
From the desperate times of Valley Forge.
A time when our nation was yet to be won
And our shivering patriots could not see the Sun!

Fight on they were told or be slaves to the king --
Unfurl the banner, let the freedom bells ring!
So we gave you a nation and mighty you grew
Under liberty's rainbow and warmed by its hue.

It is time once again for the clang of cold steel
And the plowshares must sadly be beaten again.
Take courage from us who set forth the ideal
Fight for the words, writ with blood drenched pen,
Of life and liberty - our sacred birthright.
We send you our prayers - don't extinguish the light!"

He rode away through clouds of dust
O'er the horizon I watched him ride
A simple man - yet noble and just.
We kept on marching our steady stride,
Into the battle, now knowing why
For the USA we were willing to die.
