Gold 'n Values When I am asked why I am so enamored of gold, It is as if it is an accusation Rather than a genuine inquiry, As to my reasons. I reply that it's a matter of values, Not only monetary, but it is allied With all the values that one should Live by. Gold is as immutable, rare and as precious As one's personal values should be. Because it's real and tangible, Because one can reach out To this thing of beauty and touch it, Caress it like one can reach out And caress one's wife, lover or children, Not out of greed or possessiveness But out of magnanimous appreciation Of their manifest good qualities. It is real and valuable, as they are. Alfred Korzbyski made the extraordinary observation, "The map is not the territory." Too bad that the intransigent tinkerers of the treasury Don't appreciate that their paper money is just a chimera, A fabrication that men tuck away in the back of their minds Bolstered by faith in an unrealizable promise. Faith in the belief in the words of powerful men Whose sole reason for being is to lord it over others. Why faith when faith is unnecessary to ensure that Traders of good will will honor their transactions? Traders using gold as their medium of exchange Know that their agreements will be uncomplicated By unforeseeable fluctuations in currency rates And that their fortunes won't just disappear — At the stroke of a pen. Conquistadors, pirates and every imaginable despot Have realized the unique position of gold in monetary affairs. Aeons of tradition, fables and folk-lore have instilled, Justifiably, The aura of this noble metal in the psyche of men. Perhaps it's not just an etymological curiosity That the abbreviation for the element, gold, "Au" Can be associated with the mystical attribute of an "aura" of beauty, Charisma, Or whatever. No binary encoding of ones and zeroes — Pulses, existing for only millionths of a second In electronic exchange between financial institutions Can compare with the tortuous voyage of liquid, elemental gold Expelled from the bowels of the earth In an orgasmic paroxysm, Upward to the surface, cooling and patiently waiting To be exploited by mankind — For his well-being. Those who deny the role of gold in financial affairs Might also deny values in personal affairs. Values encompass the totality of one's approach to life. Gold is true, incorruptible, honest. It is what it is And it doesn't represent anything other than what it is. It is the territory, not the map. It is a metaphor for personal integrity. Charles de Gaulle had it right when he said, "Gold is absolute objectivity. It is blind, like justice. It has no politics and ideology, no likes or dislikes, no friends or enemies. All it recognizes is its possessor, whom it serves faithfully So long as he has it." Discuss this Article (0 messages) |
