"Holding Court"
by Barbara Branden
At the suggestion of James Kilbourne and the request of Lindsay Perigo, I am beginning a weekly column here on SOLOHQ of responses to the questions you would like to ask me. Because Lindsay refers to me, for reasons best known to him, as "Majesty," it was agreed that the column will be named "Holding Court." (Read more...)

Mother, Ayn, Nathaniel and I ... and Death with Dignity
by Barbara Branden
[Editor's note: every so often a post appears that is of article stature, and I pluck it from its thread and put it up in lights. This is one such outstanding post, from the thread, Terri Schiavo's Sad Saga. - Linz]
Please remember this story when you are told, as you will be told, that Nathaniel is an unfeeling and cruel wretch. Remember it when you are told that there was little more to Ayn Rand than an obsession with moral absolutism. Remember it, as I do. (Read more...)

The Passion of Barbara Branden
by Barbara Branden
I am proud of The Passion of Ayn Rand. I told the truth about Ayn Rand, to the best of my ability, knowledge, and recollection. That is all I needed to do. But I would like to say something about why I wrote the book, since my reasons have proved to be of interest to many of my readers. (Read more...)

Sicking The Saddamites #5: It Works!
by Barbara Branden
When I see what a people, most of whom have never experienced freedom, will dare for the chance to be free, I know that one must never give up on the human race. And one must never give up on America ... we must always remember that here, in this land that is the world’s last best hope, we have come as close to perfection as we human beings, in our slow advance through blood-soaked centuries, have yet come. And that is very close indeed. (Read more...)

On Smoking
by Barbara Branden
[Editor's note - this article is reproduced with her permission from Barbara's web site, in light of the "addiction" thread currently on this board.]
In the endless conversations, essays, articles, television shows, letters to the editor, and debates about the tobacco industry versus the government, one issue is considered unarguable: that cigarettes are addictive. (Read more...)

The Anti-Misanthrope's Manifesto
by Barbara Branden
[Editor's note - I spotted this post from Barbara on the thread below re 'The Loner's Manifesto.' I couldn't leave it there, hidden from view, eloquent hymn to the human spirit that it is! Hence, I'm re-posting it here as an article. I've removed the name of the person to whom it was a reply, just so he doesn't feel "got at" & because the sentiments here are a salutary admonition to all of us - Linz]
As Objectivists and Soloists, we all have exalted dreams which we try to reach -- and some of us assume that we are alone to have such dreams. Life is not easy for anyone, and many give up their dreams in despair, but that does not make them monsters. There are monsters in the world, but let's reserve that condemnation for those who deserve it. (Read more...)

Why Many Libertarians Are Voting Against America
by Barbara Branden
It is George W. Bush, not Jacques Chirac, who understands the threat of Islamo-fascism. It is George W. Bush, not Vladimir Putin, who stands against the massed hordes that demand our extinction. If we turn against him and against America, as so many libertarians are doing, we will surely deserve whatever happens to us. (Read more...)

John Kerry Reporting for Duty
by Barbara Branden
For the past year, I have thought that John Kerry was both weak and a hypocrite. Recently, since information about his Vietnam "service" has come out, I realized that he also was a liar. Today, I am beginning to think that the man is demented. Either that, or he thinks that his audiences are of subnormal intelligence and have no memories. Or both. (Read more...)
